I KNOW THAT YOU THINK THAT I THINK
SEPTEMBER 6TH - 26TH 2024
GALLERY SADE LOS ANGELES // 204 S AVENUE 19 LA CA 90031
SADE-LA@SADE-LA.COM // @SADELOSANGELES // @UNCANNYSFVALLEY
I was dating this guy and he was dumb and very cute. You wouldn’t think he was dumb, he literally worked at NASA as a programmer or something. His roommate was a woman and an engineer who he often talked about in a really negative way. One day he was just roasting this girl, talking about how she was gross and her bag was ugly and dirty for some reason. I responded, “Why are you talking so badly about her? You’re being mean for no reason!” And he was like... “I KNOW THAT YOU THINK THAT I THINK THAT YOU’RE A DUMB BIMBO, BUT I DON'T, I THINK YOU’RE SMARTER THAN HER!!”
This comment offers a laughable distillation of the frightening experience of the filtration of male perspective of both who I am, and who I might think I am. When we perform selfhood emotion how much of it comes from what we’ve actually experienced or felt? How much comes from the culture we’ve consumed our whole lives? Are we just collages of our consumption? Where do I end and where does culture begin in or my perception/ performance of self, identity, and emotion?
These are the questions presented and never answered by the works in I Know That You Think That I Think. My subjects are white women (and one man) expressing heightened “hysterical” emotions from reality television, film, and art history. I’m interested in the identification and decontextualization of that moment when the figure hits the crescendo of drama, the height of emotion. These works are about the line between the real and the performed, the constant movement between representation and reality.
The videos I create digitally push, pull, and stretch the faces and gestures of my subjects to further isolate and intensify that seed of their performative emotion to its most brutal capacity. I manipulate and morph their expressions to take their pain, fear, fury, agony, and anger to a state that moves between plausible physicality and monstrous fiction.
I translate these digital animations through a process of charcoal drawing that pulls the image further away from the original context. It is an added layer of mediation that removes the soul from the image of the physical body leaving an empty vessel for myself and the viewer to fill with their subjective experience. This cumulative dissociation from fixed meaning is achieved through layers of digital and physical manipulation, decontextualization, and conceptual intervention that indicates the fragility of the human image in visual culture.
Where does her actual self or her true expression end and where do the layers of representation and digital manipulation begin? The oscillation between reality and fabrication in these works reveals how susceptible our images are to the outside influence of those who author them. Even as we author or perform our own emotions and selfhood, the knowledge of outside surveillance and the cultural constructs we consume inevitably cloud our access to authenticity or the fallacy of a fixed “self.”

ARTIST’S STATEMENT
"On March 13th 2024 I was diagnosed with bladder cancer. It’s stage zero. I am so lucky. The doctors’ said it was a miracle they caught it when they did. I started treatment immediately. I found on June 21st that I am ALL CLEAR. Suddenly radiant health is here.
I’ve created an art exhibition as a way to process the diagnosis, the treatment and healing. The exhibition’s called SERVING CUNT // THE CANCER CHRONICLES.
I know this is bizarre and cancer is scary but it changed my life. First when I was 16 and lost my dad to the disease and I ran from it. And now, for a second time, when it visited me and I had to trust myself to go through it and LIVE LIVE LIVE."
Love, Jessie

TALLULAH DIRNFELD // PRECIOUS MOMENTS
MARCH 30 - APRIL 21 2024
TALLULAH DIRNFELD // PRECIOUS MOMENTS // SADE // PRESSKIT LINK
GALLERY SADE PROUDLY PRESENTS PRECIOUS MOMENTS, A SOLO EXHIBITION FROM LOS ANGELES BASED ARTIST TALLULAH DIRNFELD (B1994, NEW YORK CITY). THIS CURATED COLLECTION OF NEW WORKS DELVES INTO A GIRLHOOD MEMORIALIZED. DRAWING INSPIRATION FROM THE ICONIC 1970S DOLL COMPANY, PRECIOUS MOMENTS SEEKS TO CARVE OUT STATUES OF ADOLESCENCE FROM MEMORY, APPROACHING EACH IMAGE LIKE A COLLECTIBLE PORCELAIN DOLL, AN ITEM CREATED TO PRESERVE AN IDEAL OF BEAUTY AND PURITY. FOR THESE KEEPSAKES, FRAGILITY IS A VIRTUE THAT WARRANTS BEING CHERISHED, PROTECTED, AND PROUDLY DISPLAYED.
WITHIN THIS WORLD, THE ARTIST EXPLORES THEMES OF SELF-OBJECTIFICATION, ISOLATION, AND THE ABSTRACTION OF MEMORY. CANDY-COLORED HUES FADE INTO SICKLY YELLOW CASTS, CRACKS START TO CREEP ACROSS THE SURFACE, BACKGROUNDS BLUR INTO THE DISTANCE AND FACELESS FIGURES LOOM CLOSE– WE CAN SENSE THE PRESENCE OF IT ALL, BUT WE NEVER MAKE OUT THE DETAILS.
PRECIOUS MOMENTS LOOKS INTO MEMORY AS A MIRROR, SEARCHING FOR SOMETHING TO LONG FOR. LIKE HER MUSES, THE ARTIST APPLIES FOUNDATION OVER SCARS TO CREATE SANITIZED STATUES. YET BENEATH THEIR POLISHED EXTERIORS LIE RAW VULNERABILITY, TRAPPED AND TROUBLED. THEY’RE SCRUBBED CLEAN, PERFECT FOR CONSUMPTION, NEVER TO BE RECALLED, BUT THEY THREATEN WITH INVISIBLE FANGS THAT HAUNT THEIR PORCELAIN SMILES. THE NATURE OF GIRLHOOD IS INDEED PRECIOUS. BUILD A SHRINE TO IT, AND SEE HOW QUICKLY IDOLS CAN BECOME EFFIGIES, WITH JUST A SHIFT OF THE LIGHT.

FRANTZ JEAN-BAPTISTE // COMFORT IN SAFETY
FEBRUARY 24TH - MARCH 17TH 2024
"When I departed from Miami, to make my way to California. I felt disconnected from my Haitian identity. The things I’ve felt that tethered me are gone. No longer near my grasp. Such as the warm embrace, that was cast by an illuminating sun. Neither was the Indigenous dialect, infused with the colonizers rhetoric. Creole was a distant star, only used seldomly on phone calls with relatives. The vibrant colors that I know oh so well, that remind me of Port-au-Prince are altered by colors known from book descriptions such as the “city of quartz”. Anguish and confusion lead me to writing more. Most of the writing, I’ve done was soon after transcribed into paintings you are seeing now. As if I was excavating Haitian ruins of 1804. My work touches on the notion of color/identity. Is there sexuality in a warm pink or femininity in a bird of paradise green? I think not, I do see emotions in color even though the texts are masqueradING in bright hues." // 0423 (FJB)

SARA SACHS // PUBLIC SKIN
JANUARY 27TH - FEBRUARY 17TH 2024
SHE HAS NO SECRETS. HER INSIDE IS A SLUBBY CASTLE, AN EXCESSIVE AMOUNT OF ROOMS, THEY’RE ALL ENSUITE. PLENTY OF DOORWAYS AND NEVER A SINGLE CLOSED DOOR. TOO MANY VISITORS FILL UP THE SALONS AND DINING ROOMS, SHE OBVIOUSLY CAN’T ACCOMMODATE ALL OF THEM, BUT HABITUAL HOSPITALITY HAS LONG POSSESSED HER. SHE IS PUBLIC LIKE A BEACH, GUESTS MAY TRY TO DRAG SOME CONFIDENTIALITY OUT OF HER OCHRE EYES, ALWAYS UNSUCCESSFULLY. HER GAZE REMAINS TRANSPARENT. A TUNNEL OR A CANAL IS WHAT HER BODY FEELS LIKE, AND SHE KEEPS INVITING PASSENGERS. SHE KEEPS DECORATING THEM WITH HER DUSKS. ONCE SOMETHING IS DECORATED IT IS A BIT MORE VEILED AND A BIT MORE EXPOSED. YOU DON’T DECORATE SECRETS, YOU HIDE THEM SOMEWHERE DIM. THEY PROBABLY ALARM YOU.
SHE IS NOT EXACTLY FEARLESS, BUT CLOSE ENOUGH. HER LEATHER HEART STORED IN A CHEST FULL OF NATURAL BORN LIGHT, IT HAS MADE HER DURABLE BUT NOT INSENSITIVE TO DRAMA. CURTAINS ARE DRAWN IN HER PRESENCE AND AS WORDS CEASE TO SUFFICE, SHE CRAFTS. A BULKY LANGUAGE OF SHADOWS AND SUITS AND UNSAID YEARNINGS. SHE IS A VACANT CANVAS, RIPE, SHE LOOKS LIKE AN OVERDUE KISS. SLUGGISH SUNS HAVE ROASTED HER SURFACE FOR DECADES, POLISHED HER SUMMITS AND MADE HER ABLE TO MEET EVEN THE MOST PRECIOUS ERECTION WITH ELEVATED INDIFFERENCE. PRACTICALLY IMPENETRABLE, SHE INSISTS ON THE KIND OF PRAGMATISM THAT RANK FRUITY SUNSETS ALONGSIDE THE SPARKLING GLOSSY GREYNESS OF A FINANCIAL DISTRICT. LIFE: LAPSES OF AGONY AND EXCITEMENT AND SOME CONVINCING RESULTS BEFORE A GILDED FUNERAL. SHE SWALLOWS HERSELF AND HER BLOSSOMING SADNESS, BUT SWARMS OF ENTITLED GUESTS STILL INHABIT HER. THEY OBSERVE HER, THEY BELIEVE SHE CAN MAKE THE CATASTROPHES OF THEIR PERSONALITIES BEAUTIFUL AGAIN, THEY BELIEVE SHE CAN MAKE THEIR LIPS REDDER. THEY’RE WRONG. WITH A COLORLESS MOON IN HER MOUTH, SHE DOESN’T SAY A WORD ABOUT ALL THE COMING THEATERS. NONETHELESS, AUDIENCES WILL KEEP SHOWING UP, SHE WILL KEEP DECORATING THEM WITH HER ABYSSES. DECORATIONS HAVE A SEDUCTIVE POTENTIAL, MUCH LIKE THE UNSPEAKABLE. SHE IS A SEDUCTION AND SHE IS A SECRET.

TIM BISKUP // SMOKE // PRESSKIT HERE
Drawing is meditation. My attention is on what is emerging. Like watching life form.
I don’t know what it’s going to be. My goal is to avoid attaching to what my mind is trying to get me to do. The materials are common, so I don’t feel much restraint to the flow. What emerges is deeply personal and therapeutic.
The technique of transitioning these drawings onto canvas took years to develop... but is now an equal form of meditation. It’s about taking care of the image. Guiding it onto the wall with its integrity intact. The paintings are monuments to the specific temporal moments when the drawings happened.

NONE OF MY HORSES LIKE THEIR STABLES
MAY 20 – JUNE 11 2023
HUNCZAK CREATES A GNAWING REALITY OF GESTURAL ANXIETY AND RELENTLESS PHANTOM BURDEN. FRANTIC STRUCTURES CREATE SPACE AWAY FROM IMAGINARY FEAR THAT STEMS FROM A PERIPATETIC EXISTENCE . ASSEMBLED FRAGMENTS REPRESENT SYMBOLIC REFUGE IN AN ATTEMPT TO REACH UNOBTAINABLE THRESHOLDS OF COMFORT. WHILE LONGING FOR A STABLE WORLD, HUNCZAK CONCEIVES A NEW MEANING FOR “CONSTRUCTION” DRIVEN BY A NEED FOR IMMEDIATE RELIEF FROM NONSTOP PANIC.
HUNCZAK’S SPATIAL OBSESSION SPILLS ACROSS MATERIALITY BY BUILDING UP SURFACES AND LAYERS FROM SCRAPS AND DISCARDED HEAPS TO FIND A FORM FOR SELF-ASSURANCE AND A RECLAMATION AND RECREATION OF HOME.
MATERIAL INTERACTIONS BREATHE INTO MELANCHOLIC REALIZATIONS OF IMPOSSIBLE SAFETY.
ANDREW HUNCZAK (B 2000, DENVILLE, NEW JERSEY) IS A PAINTER AND SCULPTOR LIVING AND WORKING IN BROOKLYN, NEW YORK.

LOVERS TALK VOLUME 1
9 PAINTINGS 9 SONGS BY
SARA MARLOWE HALL & ZUK ZUK
APRIL 8TH 2023 - MAY 7TH 2023
LOVERS TALK VOLUME 1 // PRESSKIT LINK
LOVERS TALK Volume 1 Is an artistic project between Artist Sara Marlowe Hall & Musician Matthew Zuk. Sara Marlowe Hall is an abstract painter from London, England. Matthew Zuk is a composer and musician from Los Angeles, California. The two have been living together in Los Angeles for over 9 years. The conversation of creativity has been the bed of a deep understanding between the couple during their relationship, from the beginning they have looked towards each other for inspiration and have developed a love language back and forth of sound and image. It was only natural that the two found it was time to create a body of work that is representative of the two.
During the year of 2022 Sara & Zuk began making Lovers Talk, the two would paint and record in Sara’s Studio in Lincoln Heights. It started while Zuk was on tour and Sara spent 2 months painting a collection of 9 paintings for Zuk to then respond to. Once she was done Zuk then set up his instruments and recording gear and would begin to respond. He would hang a painting on the wall opposite to him and compose what came naturally in that moment. The movement of the paintings dictated by the colors, shapes and textures created the tone for the songs and the mood that Zuk would respond to. This then created the narrative and determiner of how the musical piece sounds and feels.
The feeling is the same amongst the two expressions both painter and musician, albeit in different mediums. There are no figures in the art and no words in the music. The work across both mediums is abstract. The focus of each body of work is texture and emotion. The work is purely visceral and does not attempt to say anything, but rather put the audience in a state of calm. For both Artists and the audience the challenge is to react and feel completely emotionally connected without having to intellectualize. Using each other's work as an interpretative starting point, it ends up leading each side of the project to create a style and body of work that is determinedly different than one either one would have made without the other. The creative process for many is a solitary endeavor, this process forces adaptation and compromise like in a real life relationship. With each other in mind, the work comes from each other’s deep understanding of one another which birthed LOVERS TALK Volume 1.
Gallery Sade Los Angeles is located at 204 Avenue 19, Los Angeles, California. The works will be on view every Saturday & Sunday from 1-6pm from April 8th to May 7th, 2023, and by Private Viewing Appointment at all other times.

JOHN DWYER // ABANDONED OUTPOST
OPENING EVENT THURSDAY AUG 19 7-11P
ABANDONED OUTPOST
I love when nature reinstates it’s hold on vacant buildings.
There are these munitions storage bunkers from World War II on a small island my parents would take me to off the coast of Rhode Island when I was young. My young imagination was so enchanted by the forest mess that had erupted thru the walls and floors of these cement fortifications. Dirty windows would sun-flake the small animal bones and dried shit speckled floors.
Stronger than two feet of reinforced concrete, roots slowly ruptured the slab until cracks appeared and relent for the passage of nature.
I believe the world to be stronger than the human race and long after we are gone nature will be the Godhead
I think about that often as there are more humans, more encroached on spaces, more e-junk, more plastics, more information, more contact, more opinions… more more more ..just more of everything.
Endless tides of connection and data.
It’s exhausting
When the torrent relents there will be healing, growth, and perhaps some peace.
I can see the cracks forming everywhere
This year was particularly difficult for everyone.
I am an artist, its what I’ve always fought to be.
Filling my time with art…music, painting, printmaking etc etc
Art is the anchor to earth and to peace of mind.
These paintings represent some taken back spaces that were once tread upon unendingly by human things and are now reclaimed by quiet things of a peaceful nature.
A museum / mausoleum to the once mighty human.

REID CALVERT /// FISH
REID CALVERT’S FISH represents a visionary photographic exploration of the artist’s fascination in the fertile friction inherent in cultural collisions. The titular FISH (Fish Fiorucci), is a 23-year old non-binary Mexican-American model and agent hybrid who founded queer centric casting agency, f10, in Brownsville at the sharpened southenrmost tip of Texas. The fact that this unlikeliest place between places is also home to Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starbase launchpad only makes this first strike of a match more incendiary. — BLH
